Period 1 : Section A (1a-2d)
I. The analysis of teaching material
The teaching material is the listening and speaking part in this unit. The topic of this unit is volunteering and charity. The topic is very important to the student. Students should learn to protect environment in reality. It is very interesting and useful, but there are some new words and phrases in the passage. After the class, the students should remember the new words and new sentence patterns.
II. The analysis of the students
Most students from the rural school have an average English level, and they are not good at listening and speaking. This unit is for the students who are from Grade1 in junior high school. As junior high school students, they may feel curious or worried about English learning, so I design different kinds of activities to help them to understand and learn the language points. That can not only help them to overcome their fear, but also can make them enjoy the success by speaking and listening. In this way, I think the students can learn more from my class and have lots of fun.
III. Teaching objectives
According to the curriculum standard of English, the teacher sets the following objectives.
A. Knowledge objectives:
1. Through the explanation of the new words, 80% of the students can pronounce and read those new words.
2. Through the explanation of the new sentences and the role play, 90% of the students can read the new words and sentences fluently and correctly.
3. 80% of students can use the new words and sentence structure to make their own dialogues. And some lower students can modify the sentences by changing the key words.
New words: city, cheer, volunteer, notice, lonely,
New sentences:
I hope to work outside.
You could help to clean up the city parks.
B. Ability objectives:
After the learning of new words and sentences and practicing the listening and speaking in pairs,
1. Students will be able to know how to find the key words while listening.
2. 70% of students will be able to make short dialogues about offering help.
3. Through the role play and the exercises, 80% of the students can learn how to use the new words and sentences to talk about offering help correctly, meanwhile, through the listening practice and the conversation, most students can improve listening and speaking skills.
C. Moral objectives:
Through the process of talking about volunteering and charity, students can learn to protect environment and help others.
IV. Key points & difficulties
A. Key points:
1. Students can pronounce the new words correctly. Meanwhile, they can understand the meaning and usage of those words.
2. Students can use the sentence pattern “I hope to… ”, “I’d like to…” to say some sentences about offering help.
3. Students can improve their listening skills by finding key words.
B. Difficulties:
1. Students have difficulties in making a dialogue by using new words.
2. Some middle level students can understand a little bit long conversations.
3. As the students have a limited vocabulary, so they may have some difficulties in communicating with others about offering help fluently and freely by using the new sentence structure.
V. Teaching method & aids
A. Teaching methods
(1) Task-based Language Teaching Approach (Through the activities, students will finish the tasks.)
(2) Communicative Approach (Through the pair work, students will be encouraged to communicate with the teacher and their partners.)
(3) Audio-Visual Method (Through tasks of listening and speaking, students will improve their skills of oral English. )

Step 1 Lead-in
1. Greeting to the class.
2. Try to translate the following sentence.
3. Have you ever been a volunteer? What could you do?
【Purpose】This step is based on the Communicative Approach. This step is based on the Communicative Approach. By greeting to the students, they can get ready in class quickly. And students can be interested in this class by translate some sentences.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Play a guessing game.
2. Discussing: What can we do to help people?
【Purpose】This step can attract students’ attention, and students can be interested in this class and have a deep impression of some new words.
Step 3 Work on 1a
1. Look at the ways you could help people in the picture. Then list other ways.
2. Discussing: If I have lots of money, I would…
【Purpose】This step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. Designing an activity just like 1a, students can say some usual words about offering help. And it can set up a good base on the listening tasks.
Step 4 Listening
1. Listen and number the ways the boy and girl could help others.
_______The girl could visit the sick kids in the hospital to cheer them up.

_______ The girl could volunteer in an after-school study program to teach kids.

2. Free talk:
If your class is going to do volunteer work next weekend, what advice would you give?
【Purpose】This step is based on the Audio-Visual approach. Students need to number the four sentences and do a free talk after listening, so they can further practice the intensive listening skills and learn how to put out new words and new sentences.
Step 5 Work on 2a-2c
1. Listening tasks
1) Listen and check the things they are going to do to tell people about it.
2) Listen again. Fill in the blanks.

2. Work on 2c (Make a conversation using the information in 2a and 2b.)
【Purpose】This step is based on the Audio-Visual approach and Task-based Teaching Method. From finding the key words to listening to tapes, it will gradually help students to learn how to find tips before listening. And doing an exercise after listening is to help students to put out the target language.
Step 6 Exercise
1. Discussion: What can we do on City Park Clean-Up Day? Write down your plan.
2. Work on 2d (Role-play the conversation)
3. What are old people’s homes looks like in China? What can we do in old people’s home?
【Purpose】This step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. Students will do exercises to practice the language points.
Step 7 Summary
1. Students should say what did they learned in this lesson.
2. Students summarize the important words and sentences by using the blackboard design.
【Purpose】This step is based on the Task-based Teaching Method. It can help students to improve their ability of summing up.
Step 8 Homework
1. Remember the words and expressions.
2. Finish the exercises in the workbook.
Level A students:1. Make two short dialogues based on the information in 1b, 2b
2. Recite the dialogue of 2d.
Level B students: 1. Copy the 1c, 2c .
2. Read the dialogue of 2d skillfully.
【Purpose】Reciting the language points is good for students to accumulate the expressions, and it’s necessary to do exercises to check if students understand the language of the class.
